Storage That Closes and Locks

Open shelving is fine until you have something worth locking up. These are full-height cabinets with doors and keys — for the cordless tools, the chemicals you'd rather kids not reach, and the gear that keeps walking out of an open garage.

Metal or Resin — Pick for the Room

The two cabinets here solve the same problem in different materials, and which one is right depends less on budget than on the garage itself. Metal is stiffer and takes a beating. Resin doesn't rust, doesn't dent, and shrugs off damp. Both lock, both stand about six feet, both assemble at home with the hardware in the box.

Before You Buy

Metal is the stiffer build — the Manhattan Comfort Fortress is textured steel with a recessed handle and holds its shape under heavy, awkward loads. Resin is the better call where moisture is the enemy: the Suncast BMC7200 won't rust or dent, which matters in an unheated garage, a basement, or anywhere near a door that lets weather in. If the garage stays dry and you're storing heavy metal tools, go metal. If it swings damp and cold, go resin.

Both cabinets have a real door lock and key. That's the main reason to buy a cabinet over open shelving — cordless tool batteries, chemicals, and anything you'd rather not have visible through an open garage door all go behind a locked door instead of on a shelf.

Anchoring any full-height cabinet is the right call, especially with kids or pets in the house, and doubly so once the top shelf is loaded. The Fortress ships with wall brackets included for exactly this. Anchor into studs where you can, and load heavy items on the lower shelves regardless.

Lockable Garage Cabinets: Metal and Resin

A garage cabinet earns its place the day something goes missing off an open shelf. Garage Guard Supply carries two full-height lockable cabinets, chosen to cover the two conditions most garages fall into. The Manhattan Comfort Fortress is diamond-textured metal, 74.8 inches tall by 30.3 wide and 18.2 deep, with three adjustable shelves plus one fixed, a recessed metal handle, a unique door lock and key, and wall brackets included. Round metal legs lift it off the slab, which keeps the base out of standing water and makes sweeping underneath possible. The Suncast BMC7200 is a 72-inch freestanding resin cabinet with three adjustable shelves and a lock — resin won't rust or dent, so it holds up in unheated, humid, or temperature-swinging spaces where a steel cabinet eventually shows it. Both assemble at home with included hardware. Between them you can secure tools, chemicals, seasonal gear, and anything else that shouldn't be sitting in the open when the garage door is up.
